Having unchecked high blood pressure, can cause blood vessel damage, negative changes can be seen in the arteries, the kidneys, the brain and on the retina of the eye.

The damaged blood vessels can become so hard that the heart works to exhaustion trying to push the blood in very inflexible pipes and often ends up damaged.

Did you have your blood pressure monitored lately?

You can help yourself to avoid this silent killer. Have an assessment today of your risks and learn how to manage, reverse or prevent the ravages of high blood pressure.

DIABETES Prevention/management

Prevention of diabetes starts in the mother's wombIf you are older than 40 years, have excess body fat, particularly truncal obesity with waist circumference greater than 88cm in women and greater than 102cm in men, you are more at risk of becoming diabetic. Other factors that influence your risk are: Glucose intolerance, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, a history of gestational diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander, Indian or Chinese, African American, Hispanic American, and Native American.

Also a low birth weight and/or malnutrition in pregnancy may cause metabolic abnormalities in a foetus that later lead to diabetes.

Getting Better Quicker

Improving Immunity

“The immune system is a collection of biological processes within an organism that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens and tumor cells. It detects a wide variety of agents, from viruses to parasitic worms, and needs to distinguish them from the organism's own healthy cells and tissues in order to function properly” – The Wikipedia.

Factors that influence the immune system:

  • Chronic stress.

  • Ongoing immunological dysregulation.

  • Continued use of pharmaceutical antibiotics.

  • Increased intestinal permeability (This condition is easily detected by looking on the iris of your eyes (Iridology)

  • Nutritional deficiencies

Signs and symptoms of a lowered immunity are:

  • Extreme fatigue and weakness (including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)

  • Extreme exhaustion after normal exercise or exertion

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Headaches

  • Painful joints and/or muscles without redness, heat or swelling Chronically swollen lymph nodes

  • Idiopathic digestive disturbances (e.g., nausea, diarrhoea, colic) Frequent cold and flu

Lowering cholesterol

The Natural Way

Did you know that cholesterol (in the right kind and amount) is an important substance for good health?

Cholesterol drugs being used today are causing death and many side effects. Did you know that very low cholesterol has been associated with depression?

Do you know if you have a high level of the good or happy cholesterol (HDL)? Often people with a low overall cholesterol that have a low ratio of the HDL are at risk of a cardiac accident.

Did you know that cholesterol reducing drugs can cause irreparable damage to your muscles, robb you of essential nutrients that your heart and muscles need?

Did you know that food alone has the capacity to lower your cholesterol in the majority of people?

Depression, anxiety, stress

Psychodynamic influences (e.g., chronic stress, especially early childhood loss or deprivation), biologic factors (e.g., alteration of neurotransmitters including serotonin, acetylcholine, and catecholamines), and genetic predisposition (a recently identified gene called SERT that regulates serotonin, has been linked to depression) are all factors in the aetiology of many mood disorders.

Other aspects contributing to mood disorders include amount of light exposure, sleep disturbances, degree of social isolation, and nutritional deficiencies (e.g., of folate and omega-3 fatty acids).

Many patients that suffer from mood disorders like depression, report a precipitating stressful life event preceding their symptoms; the mood disorder can be immediate or delayed following a trauma such as loss of a loved one, abuse, or a natural disaster.

Mood disorders like depression can also be precipitated by other medical conditions (e.g., myocardial infarction or cancer), as well as certain medications (e.g., antihypertensive, cholesterol lowering drugs, and some heart medication).

Are you getting all the nutrients that you need to control mood disorders? Did you know that there are many herbs that can be used to help you go through it? Counselling and conventional medication are sometimes needed, but good nutrition can provide the rest of the support and wellbeing that you need. Be helped and supported gently and efficiently.

Conceiving a healthy baby

Preconception is a very important time to prepare the mother’s body for one of the most important tasks in the life of a woman: the creation of life. Many health issues, from minor debilities to life threatening malformations can be avoided through good nutrition during preconception. If the mother has enough folic acid during the month prior to conception, chances of the malformation called spina bifida are minimised.

It is believed that probably more than 50% of miscarriages are caused by the poor quality of the genetic contribution made by the father. The pain and disappointment of miscarriages could be avoided if the health of the father is brought up to a level of excellence before conception.

In a study of some 1500 couples that participated in a health building program before conception produced children with IQ’s well above average.

Wouldn’t you like to do your best on behalf of your child? Both parents should

Pregnancy and lactation care

The good work does not end at conception, during pregnancy a mother’s wellbeing is the best health insurance policy.

To keep a pregnancy enough zinc is needed, to avoid preeclampsia magnesium should be looked at, as well as the general diet of the mother.

To prevent postpartum depression there are key nutrients that the mother should make sure to have enough, as baby’s needs are met before the mother's and she can be severely depleted.

There are many herbs (powerful but safe) that can be used during pregnancy and lactation. These plants have supported women throughout the ages, and the long tradition of their use has been preserved in the hands of qualified Herbalists and Naturopaths.

  • Prolonged periods of bike riding may irritate the prostate gland.

MENOPAUSE

The View of Natural Medicine

Natural therapists view menopause as a normal transition.

Menarche, menstruation and menopause are seen as normal phases which effect women in their passage through life, and which may need supportive treatment.

Rather than encouraging mid-life women to believe they have a disease, most natural therapists (and many like-minded doctors) encourage menopausal women to adopt positive lifestyle changes, good eating patterns and a positive attitude to this phase.

Are you eating appropriately to support this important stage in your life? Did you know that with food alone many women are managing successfully many of the undesirable symptoms associated with menopause?

After a life time of nurturing and looking after other people and putting themselves last, many women find they are tired and exhausted and their bodies are screaming for attention and love. I find that many of my patients due to stress and nutritional deficiencies their bodies are in a state of inflammation and as a result they suffer from many unnecessary pains. Very often during menopause a woman needs support for her nervous system, to help her sleep better, be more relaxed and to be able to concentrate.

Naturopaths use medicines from plants (Herbal Medicine) to support women in all the different stages of life.

Herbal Medicine has a very long tradition.

In the "dark ages" women were burned as witches because they were the traditional guardians of the knowledge of such powerful medicines and the political/religious establishment saw them as dangerous. Take advantage of the knowledge that has been passed on to us today thanks to the bravery of many wonderful women.

Science today has been able to validate the knowledge that before was just tradition.

Researchers in one study found that the wellbeing of mid-life women was related to being physically well, exercising moderately, having a positive attitude to menopause and feeling happy.

Exercising, even once per week, was associated with fewer symptoms, as were positive relationships and friendships.

Hormonal status was not the relevant feature of a positive menopausal experience
